What is an IP Address?
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to a network. IPv4 addresses use 4 octets (e.g. 192.168.1.1) while IPv6 uses 8 groups of hex digits (e.g. 2001:db8::1). Every public IP can be traced to a general location and network provider.
IP Data Sources
| Field | Source |
|---|---|
| Geolocation | IP-to-location database (city-level accuracy) |
| ISP / Organisation | Regional Internet Registry (ARIN, RIPE, etc.) |
| ASN | Autonomous System Number — identifies the network operator |
| Timezone | Derived from geolocation coordinates |
Accuracy & Privacy
IP geolocation is accurate to the city level for most IPs but may be off by 50–500 km for mobile or VPN users. The coordinates represent the approximate location of the IP's registered network, not a physical device. VPNs, proxies and Tor will show the exit node's location, not the user's real location.
