Why Title Tags Matter for SEO
The title tag is the most important on-page SEO element. It appears as the blue clickable link in Google search results and tells both users and search engines what your page is about. A well-optimised title tag can significantly improve click-through rates.
Title Tag Best Practices
| Factor | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Length | 50–60 characters (Google truncates at ~600px width) |
| Keyword placement | Include primary keyword near the beginning |
| Brand | Add brand name at end, separated by | or — |
| Uniqueness | Every page must have a unique title |
| Avoid | Keyword stuffing, ALL CAPS, repeated words |
Character vs Pixel Width
Google measures title length in pixels, not characters. The limit is approximately 600px — roughly 55–60 characters for mixed-case text. Wide characters like W and M use more space than narrow ones like i and l. This tool uses character count as a reliable approximation.
