Pressure Units
Pressure is defined as force per unit area. The SI unit is the Pascal (Pa). Other units are widely used in different fields: PSI in the US for tyres and hydraulics, bar in Europe, atm for atmospheric reference, and torr/mmHg in medicine and vacuum technology.
Conversion Reference
| Unit | Equivalent in Pa | Common Use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Pa | 1 | SI base unit, very small |
| 1 kPa | 1,000 | Weather, pneumatics |
| 1 bar | 100,000 | Industrial, European tyre pressure |
| 1 atm | 101,325 | Standard atmosphere at sea level |
| 1 PSI | 6,894.76 | US tyre pressure, plumbing |
| 1 Torr | 133.322 | Vacuum science, blood pressure |
| 1 inHg | 3,386.39 | Aviation weather, barometers |
Common Reference Pressures
Standard atmospheric pressure = 1 atm = 101,325 Pa = 14.696 PSI = 1.01325 bar. Normal car tyre pressure ≈ 30–35 PSI (2.07–2.41 bar). Blood pressure 120/80 mmHg = 16/10.7 kPa.
