How MKV to GIF Conversion Works
This tool loads your video into an HTML5 <video> element, then steps through it frame-by-frame using the browser's native video decoder. Each frame is drawn onto a canvas and passed to the gif.js library, which colour-quantises and encodes a GIF — all inside your browser tab. No server, no upload, no file size limit imposed by an API.
Settings Reference
| Setting | Recommended | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 2–10 s | Longer = much larger file |
| Frame rate | 10 fps | 5 fps for small files, 15–25 for smooth motion |
| Output width | 320–480 px | GIF size grows with resolution |
Browser Compatibility Note
MKV (Matroska) playback depends on the browser and codec. Chrome supports MKV with H.264 and VP8/VP9. Firefox and Safari have limited MKV support. If your MKV does not load, try re-muxing it to MP4 first — the tool also accepts MP4 and WebM files.
