What Is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin text used as placeholder content in design, publishing and web development. It has been the industry standard filler text since the 1960s when it was popularised by Letraset dry-transfer sheets. The text is derived from Cicero's philosophical work De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (written around 45 BC), but the words have been scrambled and rearranged so that it reads as meaningless filler rather than real Latin prose. The famous opening — "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit…" — is known by virtually every designer and developer in the world.
Why Use Placeholder Text?

Lorem Ipsum vs Real Placeholder Text
Some designers prefer realistic placeholder text — actual English sentences — over classic lorem ipsum, because real language affects layout differently. English words vary in length, create natural hyphenation points, and produce different line-break patterns than scrambled Latin. For testing a font's legibility or checking how a paragraph wraps at different viewport widths, real words give a more accurate preview.
