Age Calculator
Calculate exact age in years, months and days from any birth date. Free, instant.
What Is an Age Calculator?
An age calculator computes your exact age — in years, months and days — from a date of birth to any reference date. Unlike simple subtraction, accurate age calculation must account for varying month lengths, leap years, and the rule that a full year only counts once the anniversary has been reached. This tool gives you a precise breakdown instantly, along with your total age in days — useful for legal eligibility checks, medical requirements, birthday countdowns and more.
Common Uses for Age Calculators
- Legal age verification — checking whether someone has reached 18, 21 or another threshold on a specific date.
- Retirement eligibility — calculating exact age at a future retirement date for pension planning.
- Medical contexts — paediatric dosing and medical screening often depend on exact age in months, not just years.
- School enrollment — many countries use a cutoff date (e.g. age 5 before September 1) to determine school year eligibility.
- Milestone countdowns — how many days until your 30th, 50th or 100th birthday.
Years, Months, Days vs Total Days
| Unit | What it shows | Example (born Jan 1, 2000 — Apr 18, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Years | Complete years lived | 26 |
| Months | Remaining months after last birthday | 3 |
| Days | Remaining days after last full month | 17 |
| Total days | Every day since birth | 9,604 |
How Age Calculation Works
Age is calculated by finding the difference between the date of birth and the reference date. A full year counts only when the anniversary of the birth date has been reached — not when 365 days have elapsed. The remaining months and days are then calculated from the last birthday to the reference date, which is why the result can differ slightly from simply dividing total days by 365.
